In his previous position as Vice President, Stephan Kurmann made an active contribution to the crisis management. In addition, he has been committed to socially responsible and sustainable tourism for many years and thus represents the values of Swiss youth hostels on the international stage. The “thoroughbred youth hostel” took a seat on the SJH board from 1995 to 2018, from 1999 as president, and was also nominated by the Swiss youth hostels for the presidium of Hostelling International.

Hostelling International was founded in 1932, back then as the "International Youth Hostel Federation". At that time there were already twelve youth hostel associations in Europe. The aim was to improve contact with one another and introduce common standards. Switzerland was also one of the founding members. Today, Hostelling International is the only global network of youth hostel associations with operations in 81 countries and with more than 3.7 million members one of the largest youth organizations in the world.
